FERNANDO AMORSOLO
THE
Filipino artist, Fernando Cueto Amorsolo, was born in Manila in 1892. Upon studying at the Liceo de Manila, he completed the fine arts program at the University of the Philippines in 1914. Diego Velasquez and New York postwar imitators influenced Amorsolo’s art. He had an impact on Philippine painting, particularly in the area of backlighting. He crafted paintings of self-portraits and human agony during World War II. He served as an assistant to the director and illustrator of the University of the Philippines’ College of Fine Arts after the war. Amorsolo was honored as the first Philippine National Artist and passed away in 1972. In 2003, his children founded the Fernando C. Amorsolo Art Foundation to remember his achievements and preserve the country’s history.
